Self-Portraits is a series of life-sized paintings that reconsider representations of women within art history. Taking paintings of women by male artists as a starting point, I recreated their compositions using myself as the model, shifting my position from the subject being represented to the artist directing the image.

The original figures are replaced by my own body and partially concealed beneath fabric, retaining elements of their poses while removing many of the features through which identity is usually communicated. By occupying these compositions myself, I became both artist and model, questioning who controls the representation of the female figure and who is given authorship over the image.

Each painting is named after a woman artist, placing their names into a visual history in which women have so often appeared as subjects while their contributions as artists have been overlooked.
